The Greene County Court System consists of the Circuit and combined General District, Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts. Both courts are located in the historic Greene County Court House on Court Street in Stanardsville.


Ronald L. Morris, the local Commonwealth’s Attorney, prosecutes criminal cases in all of Greene County’s courts. The Virginia General Assembly appoints the judges who serve in each of the Commonwealth’s Districts. Court security and the delivery of court papers is handled by Greene County Sheriff’s Department.

Circuit Court is the highest local court, and it handles felonies and civil lawsuits and appeals from lower courts. Court meets at 9:30 a.m. each Tuesday of the month, with the third Tuesday set for motions. Term Day is the second Monday of even months.  At this time, the grand jury is sworn in, the dockets are reviewed and grand jury indictments are considered.
Dan Bouton is Greene County’s judge for the 16th Judicial Circuit.

General District Court decides civil suits up to $15,000, hears all cases for traffic infractions and misdemeanor charges, decides criminal misdemeanor charges and holds preliminary hearings in felony cases. Court meets at 9 a.m. every Wednesday.

Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court handles all civil, traffic and criminal cases involving persons under 18 years of age as well as all domestic matters concerning custody, visitations, child support and domestic criminal cases. Court meets every Thursday at 9 a.m.

The County Clerk’s Office
It is here you can get your fishing license as well as your marriage license. Your deeds, deeds of trust and all other instruments pertaining to your land are recorded in the clerk’s office. You would come to the clerk’s office to probate a will. The Clerk’s Office is attached to the Court House and is open Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
