As a reward for hard work on and off the field, O’Connor has elected to let Andrew Carraway, a senior, start the opening game and throw the first pitch of the season. The Georgia native certainly earned that honor after spurning MLB scouts to wear his college uniform for an additional season.
In the opening game of Saturday’s doubleheader, O’Connor selected LHP Danny Hueltzen. The rookie, who will also play first base, should remain in the weekend rotation throughout the season.
Neal Davis, another southpaw, is slated to start the third game of the series on Saturday.
After a solid outing last weekend during an intrasquad scrimmage, LHP Jeff Lorick gained the nod in the series finale.
O’Connor said it was vital that his staff had a dependable closer early in the season, meaning that LHP Matt Packer assumes closer duties to start. That could change as ACC play opens in three weeks.
