There is a lot to like about Virginia’s defense. The standouts at linebacker lead the way. Jon Copper, Clint Sintim and Antonio Appleby will be missed next season. Copper made a game-changing sack on a drive that nearly gave Virginia coach Al Groh a heart attack. The panic attack stemmed from a pass interference called on Virginia rookie Chase Minnifield. From this vantage point and the stadium-issued replay, Groh had reason to be upset. Not sure he had reason to march onto the field 12 yards, but he got away with. ... Despite all the praise for the Cavaliers’ defense, certain areas will need to be fixed before Virginia can challenge a top-tier oppenent. Richmond had several chances to put points on the board or come up with big plays, but QB Eric Ward and his targets are off just a tad. If the Spiders fix that at halftime, they may walk away with a win today. Talk about Retro. Richmond has not beat Virginia since 1946. Yes, they don’t play every year. They will, for now, play every other year.
