The 11th-best tight end in the country by Scout coming out of high school, Andrew Devlin is in line to challenge Zane Parr for a starting job at defensive end. The winner of that battle should start alongside Matt Conrath next season.
Devlin has experience playing defensive end - the rising sophomore worked at the spot in practices leading up to the Gator Bowl on the scout team. Former players raved about Devlin’s work in practice during that timeframe.
While a tight end will not be needed to the same extent as it was before the arrival of Gregg Brandon’s spread offense, Virginia still has tight ends on its roster. Joe Torchia headlines a group that includes redshirt freshmen Colter Phillips and Rod Wheeler.

Jay Jenkins’ piece about UVA’s new offensive scheme this football season (Andrew Devlin)leads me to make a statement about the lack of ink and publicity this team is getting. I’ve read numerous blogs from sports scribes covering ACC teams and they extol the prospects of every team except UVA. Perhaps that is understandable since no one knows what to expect. Then too, maybe the dismal 2008 record leaves them disinterested and expecting more of the same. It appears all sports writers are playing the waiting game which may be the safest plan. You would think at least one or two scribes would go out on the limb and say “watch out for Virginia” but we don’t see that. Oh well, maybe nobody likes us.
