Virginia finishes another season at 5-7. That’s the second time in three years. And the school says they want Uncompromised Excellence. Right.

Sadly, I think it’s time for Al to go. He played an important role, transitioning the team and more importantly the students and recent alumni from a Welshian “home field advantage is overrated” attitude to a sea of orange (kind of), but the program has stalled under his watch.
Groh has lost some very talented and able assistants and replaced them with sub-par coaches. The team has nobody who can “coach up” a quarterback, and that was revealed with devastating results this season. If Groh is fired, does anybody think there’s going to be a bidding war for the services of his son, the offensive coordinator? Not likely.
If he’s willing to bring in some new assistants - some with experience, that is - he could work through this. Ron Prince is available, of course, and he’s eminently qualified to run an offense, particularly this offense. But if he stubbornly refuses to do bring in new coaching talent, I don’t see what choices the University has.

How depressing! Another long wait til September 2009 and another Al Groh Football season. It makes one wonder how other teams overcome adversity and keep up their winning traditions…Georgia Tech and Boston College, and Virginia can’t. There has to be some type of major change here at UVA.
