Welcome to Winston-Salem: UVa 0, Wake 0 (Pre-game)
Virginia is dressed in its all white uniforms today. Wake has a spicy mustard yellow top and black pants. ... It is Homecoming here today, hence the reason that the Wake tailgaters elected to stand in the middle of the road as I arrived. ... Virginia’s travel list did not include some names you would expect and some that may come as a surprise. Here are the last names of those that are not here: Duda, Smalls, Thornton, Simpson, Lane, Snyder, McCartin, Broadnax, Pickett, Mendez-Zfass, Mack, Ahunamba, E. Thornton, Bell, Rathjen, Walcott, Jarvis, Milien, Oden, Stovall, Clark, Wallace, Allen, Schautz, Detrick, Johnson, Childress, Price, Cuffee, Maghamez, Mihalik, Roberts, Van Kuiken, Wheeler, Keys, Colter Phillips, Dewey, Ruff, Gottschalk. ... Virginia is hurting at linebacker. Without Jared Detrick and Cam Johnson here, the Cavaliers only have three outside linebackers here and one is Aaron Taliaferro. This is the first road trip for Taliaferro. Mark Ambrose, who had been at tight end, has also been moved to linebacker to help the numbers game. He needs a new number. Seeing a linebacker wear No. 82 looks really weird. ... Raynard Horne worked with the second-team offense in pre-game drills, but Keith Payne is in uniform and looks sharp in limited action. ... Jimmy Howell was booming punts. Positive reviews could not be given to the placekickers. Virginia brought all three kickers (Reyering, Randolph and Hinkebein) and did not bring a back-up punter. I wonder who the back-up would be if Howell was unable to go. Virginia fans would rather not find out.
