UVa QB Lambert likes college life

Chatting with Virginia’s true freshman quarterback Greyson Lambert recently, it was interesting to learn how he’s adjusting to college life both on and off the field.

We wrote extensively recently (check out CavalierInsider archives to find that article) about Lambert adjusting to college football. When asked about college life in general, the rangy QB summed it up without a pause: “It’s great,“ Lambert said. “The student aspect is different than high school because the classes are so much larger and you’re expected to do everything on your own. Professors are lecturing, so you have to learn how to take notes on your own. In high school, I never really had to do that. It all kind of came easy to me. Now, I’m having to put time in and I’m going to study hall and doing a lot on my own.“

Being a true freshman, enrolling in January, Lambert expected some sort of hazing from the upperclassmen on the football team, but that wasn’t the case at all.

“I thought some of the upperclassmen would be picking on the freshmen, but I haven’t been picked on here at all,“ Lambert said. “Instead, I was welcomed with open arms. All the guys on the Virginia football team are down to earth guys.“

A lot of recruiting nuts from around the South were surprised when Lambert picked Virginia over some of the other football powerhouses in Dixie, including his own home state school, Georgia, and nearby Alabama, which has won two national titles under Coach Nick Saban.

“I really liked Alabama. I grew up an Alabama fan and have a lot of family there,“ Lambert said. “I also liked Georgia. I have a lot of friends there. Basically, I liked all my offers that were closer to home. Virginia was as far up north as I wanted to go. I didn’t want to go to, say a Penn State, because that’s all the way to the top of the country. I wanted to stay in the Southern areas so I could make it home somewhat easily.“

Lambert is from Wayne County High School in Jesup, Ga.

No, the football fans in Jesup didn’t threaten to burn his house down when Lambert decided to turn down the Bulldogs and chose Virginia instead.

“People in Jesup were happy for me,“ Lambert said. “They’re all close to me. It’s kind of a small town. The year before, we had two of our players go to the ACC, one to N.C. State and one to Florida State. Nobody there cares where you go, they’re just happy you’re able to go and play college football.“

Lambert said he talks to his dad regularly on the phone about the entire learning process. They have a very close relationship and talk a lot about football mechanics and the mental part of the game as well.

FUN FACT: Although Lambert used to see how far he could throw the football, he’s never really measured it since he’s grown into a stronger-armed passer. He has, however, been measured throwing the football with both of his knees on the ground. He threw the ball 55 yards three times in a row.
