Chic Fundraiser on The Catwalk
If you are looking for that perfect little number for the holiday party season, free up your Saturday evening. The Downtown Charlottesville Business Association hosts the Fourth Annual Downtown Chic Fashion Show to benefit FOCUS Womens Resource Center at 7 p.m. Sept. 19.
Downtown Chic will happen at Central Place on the Downtown Mall. It will highlight clothing and accessories from some of Charlottesvilles best establishments, including: Angelo, Boutique Boutique, The Hip Joint, Pearl, Quilts Unlimited, Spring Street and Vivians. There will be a raffle and tickets can be purchased at the stories or at the show itself. Winners will receive gift certificates to the participating stores…yay!
FOCUS helps women receive affordable counseling services, develop marketable job skills and network and offers personal development services, as well it offers youth services through TEENSIGHT. These services are offered regardless of the ability to pay and are made possible through volunteers and donations. The event is free but the proceeds from the raffle will benefit FOCUS.
For more information on the event, visit Downtown Charlottesville. For more information about FOCUS, visit FOCUS Women’s Resource Center.

Women Build Launches Fundraiser
You may have heard of Women Build and if not then you need to! This group is getting ready to begin its next house for Habitat for Humanity in the Greater Charlottesville area. Nancy Burr said the group is very close to the $60,000 goal for this next structure, the 7th since 2001 for the group. Construction is slated to begin in November or December.
To edge closer to that goal and get back to constructing, Women Build is announcing its next project: Toolboxes on Parade. All the lumber and labor is being donated for the building of the toolboxes and 100 percent of the profits will go to the Women Build program.
Women Build of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville was founded in fall 2001 to bring women together to organize, fund and construct homes for low-income working families and their children. The group is always looking for help with construction, fundraising, committee work or through donations.
Burr said the group has collected enough scrap/reclaimed/recycled lumber from around town to begin building the boxes so it is teaming up with the women from the local NAWIC (the National Association of Women in Construction) for a toolbox building day on Sunday, Sept. 20. The second step in this fundraiser is to find artists to paint/decorate the boxes. The boxes will be on display during the Nov. 7 Women With Nails event at the Habitat Store, after which they will be on display at various businesses around town. The toolboxes will be auctioned on eBay in November and December.
To apply as a pro bono artist for the event, send your name, address, phone number and email, along with a short artist biography and the subject of the proposed artwork to Women Build, 501 Grove Ave., Charlottesville 22902 or to toolboxesonparade(at)gmail.com.
