As far as fall work ensembles go, sophisticated elegance is the name of the game; meaning we fashionistas can invest in timeless pieces that will carry us through many seasons.
Here are some tips to get us started:
Incorporate classic fashion staples, like the pencil skirt, into your professional wardrobe. (Think timeless, tailored pieces.) Pair it with a feminine blouse in a small print—notably, polka dots, which are high on the trends list this season.
Although neutrals such as gray, camel and black will always work in a wardrobe, don’t be afraid to bring those brightly colored summer pieces into autumn. Tones like emerald green, saturated yellows, bright reds, and even coral—the big color of summer—remain popular throughout the season.
A great way to wear bold color is in a striking coat. This year, we’ll see less structure and fit in outerwear, and instead will look to boxier and also fluid items like capes, and jackets with oversized lapels that float away from the body.
The footwear forecast calls for simple, classic styles. (Note: cutouts and gladiator booties are out; streamlined, round-toe pumps are in.) If you’re looking for a more interesting shoe, go for t-strap heels, which pull together a feminine look and are reminiscent of 70s fashion (a major influence on designers this season). Animal-print and snakeskin textures are a big hit in shoes and extend to handbags as well.
Jewelry is another item that has been streamlined. We won’t be seeing as many bib necklaces or ribboned pieces this year, as less is more. Instead, look to simple, shiny metallics.
Bring these classic pieces together, and you have a work wardrobe you can enjoy for years to come.
