As obesity rates continue to climb in America, both amongst adults and children, it’s more imporant than ever to give our kids a positive and life-long interest in physical activity (read this article if you’re unconvinced). That’s why ACAC and the UVa. Curry School of Education are partnering to bring the community a free “Getting Kids Active: What Works?“ workshop on Tuesday, April 21 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at ACAC’s Adventure Central location on Four Seasons Drive.
The keynote speaker is Dr. James Sallis, Professor of Psychology at San Diego State University. Hailed as the “Obesity Warrior” by Time magazine in 2004, Dr. Sallis’ research focuses on physical activity promotion, particularly among youth.
Program participants will learn about the latest research-based strategies for increasing physical activity in children. According to Sallis, many effective strategies can be implemented in schools, but other strategies are needed, too. Sallis will offer insights into environmental and policy changes that can improve eating, physical activity and weight status in the United States. A question and answer period will follow.
This event is free and open to the public. Advance registration is required; click here to register online at acac.com.
