As my favorite blog so sadly points out, on Sunday candy season will be over until Halloween, i.e. we embark upon a four month stretch with no major candy holidays. I’m choosing not to mourn, but rather to spend the summer enjoying healthy dark chocolate in moderation while dreaming of candy corn.

And really, Easter is the best candy holiday to end the season with a bang. All religion aside, the wrapping on most easter candy is gorgeous (especially if you appreciate pastels like I do), the details on some of the molded candy are very well executed, and something about making candy egg-shaped just rocks my world.

imageMy perfect Easter basket would include the whole gamut of holiday favorites: a generous bag of Jelly Belly beans, a box of Peeps, a bag of M&M Speck-tacular peanut butter eggs, a Lindt Gold Bunny, and a Cadbury Creme Egg (I allow myself one per year after looking at the nutrition info). But my hands-down favorite? Whoppers Robin Eggs. My friends think I’m a dork, but I love eating candy in the car. For me at least, it makes for more mindful eating than snacking away at my desk or in front of the TV, and it’s something to look forward to all day during work. The best car candy is Whoppers, but their easter iteration is even better and each year a bag of these rides shotgun from St. Paddy’s to Easter. When dissolved slowly in my mouth the candy coating is satisfyingly reminiscent of buttercream, and the chocolate and malt melt together beautifully. Or, they are perfect to crunch on in a moment of road-rage/low blood sugar. I prefer the mini size, but the original size are fun for a two-bite treat. They’re also one of the least expensive holiday candies; I got my last bag for under $2 at Kroger.
