Women Build held its fourth annual Hike for Habitat on May 1, raising nearly $9,000 for the construction of the group’s eighth house. More than 65 hikers met for a light breakfast at Blue Ridge Mountain Sports, one of the hike’s sponsors, then dispersed to various locales. Seventeen hikers and their dogs tacked a hike at Sugar Hollow, while 11 participates—led by John Holden—hiked and canoed part of the Rivanna River. Other hikes included Ragged Mountain Natural Area, Hawks Bill Summit and Ramsey’s Draft.

Women Build, a program of Habitat for Humanity, works to recruit, empower and train women to build simple, decent and affordable homes. The Women Build worksites provide a unique opportunity to learn construction skills and build leadership and teamwork skills. Our mission is to provide a setting where women are comfortable learning and applying building skills. The Greater Charlottesville Women Build program was founded in fall 2001 and since then Women Build volunteers have raised funds for, and are now helping in the construction of, its seventh area home. All proceeds from the most recent Hike for Habitat will go directly toward future construction of our eighth house.

Plans are already under way for the fifth annual Hike for Habitat, to be held April 30, 2011. Put it on your calendar! Visit http://cvillehabitat.org/womenbuild for information.
