Boy Scouts perform service work with a can-do attitude
Today, I got the privilege of going out on a dreary, rainy day to accompany some fourth-graders who were hiking various local neighborhoods in search of food.
I have to say, I really had a fun time.
Those little boys really inspired me. They didn’t care that it was drizzling, nor that it would switch to a heavier rain, that soaked a bunch of them. They were committed to completing a job that they’d begun a week ago - Scouting for Food.
Last Saturday, they went out and delivered empty food donation bags to many neighborhoods. The bags asked for donations to the local area food bank, Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. The bags stated that the scouts would return today, to retrieve the filled bags that were left for them at front doors.
You should have seen those little guys’ faces! They got so excited when they were able to retrieve dried beans and rice for those who have less.
I asked Sammy Smith and Sidney Gones if they’d ever met someone who had needed a food donation. Neither had.
I told them about myself and a situation I’d been in way back when.
Then I thanked them.
Not only did those kids get to perform a valuable community service, but each time they picked up a little bag of donated food, I believe that the donors were also giving those kids a boost to their esteem too by letting know that their efforts mattered.
