Thanks for the helpful pet site!

This entry is to kake79:

Thank you so much for recommending that site on pet education in reference to my putting spices on Mazie’s dog food, such as garlic and onion powder.
I’d kept the poinsettia leaves picked up and high up, so she wouldn’t be tempted to eat any of those, but I never considered garlic or onions as hazardous to her health. I wouldn’t want to do that.

Below, in case anyone else is making the mistake I did, is what peteducation.com says about feeding a dog onions or garlic, in any form:

Onions and garlic (raw, cooked, or powder) contain sulfoxides and disulfides, which can damage red blood cells and cause anemia. Cats are more susceptible than dogs. Garlic is less toxic than onions.

It might make kake79 happy to know that we actually had gotten away from feeding Mazie human spices (I was scared that it wasn’t good for her, because I knew for cats that human foods aren’t good for them.) We have resorted to feeding her about 4 ounces of canned dog food (with gravy) in her cup to cup and a half of dry dog food, twice a day.

She seems to really love it and we feel better knowing she’s eating food that’s formulated for her, with lots of good things in it like veggies, meats and rice.
And she also seems to be losing some of her poundage too, slowly. We don’t want her model thin grin, but she’d definitely gained some weight where we couldn’t feel her rib cage at all.

And we take her out for 3-4 walks a day.

Thanks again kake79!  rolleyes  It’ll come in handy with my cockateils too!
