It was a long, three-day holiday with some new experiences, from President Bush and protesters to insight and incite. And, to cap it all off, we walked down to Charlottesville High School under threat of severe storm, put down our seats and watched the McIntire Park fireworks. OK, others watched them. For the first time in my life, I managed to sleep through them.

Supporters and opponents of President Bush stood in line together to get tickets for the Fourth of July event at Monticello with nary a smidgen of violence or anger directed at each other. Considering the length of the line and the width of the wait, it proves that Americans are a classy group of decent folks, at least in Central Virginia.
