Almost Over
I set match to page and watch as the yellow flame turns the multicolored, glossy paper gray and black, rising higher and burning faster as it meets the accelerant poured on the months of December, July and January specifically for this purpose.
Goodbye 2007.
It wasn’t a bad year. It wasn’t the best of years, either. It was just another year, a year that was. It started rough and had its moments of good and bad. There was a graduation and going off to college. There was filling out financial aid forms and worrying about how to make payments. There were plays and sports and motorcycle rides. There were long hours and good friends. It was, to steal like the Dickens, the best of times and the worst of times.
It was a year where all of my frailities and weaknesses were exposed to the one person who is the most unforgiving critic, myself. It was a year like so many others that run into each other, a year without great accomplishments or failures.
It’s time for a change. It’s time for improvement. It’s time to reach higher and maybe fall farther.
The calendar’s burning bright and I close the door on the wood stove, leaving it open enough to draw air and fan the flame. 2007 is over. Let’s see what we can do with 2008.
