Just when you thought it was safe to watch the cable shows….

Let me get this straight:

She’s a woman running for high office.

She’s supported getting as much federal money for as many state projects as possible and even hired lobbyists to secure federal and state money for her community.

She has taken money from a strange, behind the back and under-the-table donation system that, while not involving Buddhist nuns, did involve special interests.

Her husband is a bit of a nut and a union member.

A private attorney has been authorized to spend $95,000 to defend her against abuse of power accusations.

She has smoked marijuana in the past.

She has a child with disabilities.

She has a pregnant teen-aged daughter with a very colorful character for a baby daddy.

And the woman is a Republican.

What a long, strange trip this is.

Granted, the choice of Sarah Palin as a VP candidate took everyone by surprise.  Nobody knew anything about her, and everybody started looking.  Some are thrilled, some…not so much.  I think her family should be left out of the conversation (even though they have been brought to the forefront by the McCain Campaign).  We should be focusing on issues and I’ve seen enough to know that Sarah Palin, as mayor of Wasilla, inherited a surplus and left a debt of $22 million for a town of 9,000 people.  Sarah Palin doesn’t believe that global warming exists (did she notice that there was less ice in Alaska in the summer?), and has sued the federal government because polar bears were put on the endangered species list.  And Sarah Palin, who said she fights against earmarks, fought for more earmarks per capita from our tax dollars than another state.  Those things are enough to make me question her candidacy.
