Letters From a Peaceful Place?
Local Peacelings planning anti-presidential protests on the mountaintop mansion this July 4, are asking Monticello to disinvite the Bush-man and sending letters to dailyprogress.com.
The letters have come from all over, including California, Vermont, Wisconsin and even one from Germany. Well, it turned out the letter from Germany was actually selling some really fine Rolex watches at amazing prices and these little pills that make you, well, you know.
Anyway, here’s a small sample of what’s been sent:
We are unable to protest at Monticello as we are rather rickety here, but even us senior citizens are truly disappointed that Bush is allowed to visit. I believe that lawyers in Europe are trying to bring Bush and Cheney to the Hague to stand trial. And well they SHOULD. What a mess that we in the States are not complaining in an effective way. Thanks for reading.

I am a former Charlottesville resident and an alumna of UVA. I am quite frankly stunned and saddened that the Thomas Jefferson Foundation would invite President Bush to preside over the Naturalization ceremony on July 4th. I have registered my wish for a retraction of the invitation with the Foundation.
Sincerely,

As a graduate of the University of Virginia (College ‘83) I was sickened to see that Monticello would even be considering allowing one of the worst criminals in the history of this country, and the world, to sully their grounds. Jefferson is probably rolling in his grave in anticipation of the self-congratulatory,hypocritical mass of barely-intelligible syllables that will foul the air if this is allowed to transpire. I will be contacting the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, as well, to try and dissuade them from allowing this travesty. With around 200 days left in the current criminal’s term, this country should be examining the articles of impeachment drawn up by Rep. Dennis Kucinich: That is what the founders of the Constitution would demand!

Dear Sir,
It is my opinion that allowing George W Bush to even step on the grounds of Monticello is a desecration of Monticello and an insult to Thomas Jefferson.I have attended many of the naturalization ceremonies at Monticello and have come away with a deep since of pride and appreciation. This year I will attend with shame if George W Bush is on the grounds, as he has done more to disregard our constitution, take away our freedoms and rob us of our place in world affairs, than any evil adversary could imagine.
The management of the hallowed grounds of Monticello should uninvite this president immediately, and make their reasons known throughout the world.
Sincerely,
Jack Faw, Charlottesville.
I have just called Monitcello and demanded they uninvite the war criminal G. W. Bush. His presence will desecrate the mission of Monticello as it has desecrated the constitution, the people of the US and the presidency.
If education and preservation are the mission. Bush is the antithesis of preservation and education and a fierce proponent of lies, murder and profiteering of such. Bush should not be allowed to set foot on the grounds. He should be immediately arrested and speak only in court wearing shackles.
If you’re fair and balanced you’ll cover this fairly with integrity.
If you’re complicit or in their pocket, you’ll ignore it.
Jimmy
Dear Sir/Madam,
I just got off the phone with staff at Monticello to find out if they would be so brave as to uninvite Bush in light of his desecration of most of what Thomas Jefferson fought for. I was told that the “Office of the President” was invited not necessarily the President himself. Say what? Will your paper look into this, please?
Thank you,
Rain Burroughs, Richmond, Virginia
I wanted to let you know that I called Monticello and let them know that, as a member of the Charlottesville community, I thought it was a complete and utter disgrace that they were letting george bush speak there on the 4th. I left my name and number with them.
Thanks,

To the Editor:
I would like to register my indignation that President Bush has been invited to speak at The Thomas Jefferson Foundation, a foundation that honors the memory of one of this nations’ outstanding presidents and citizens; a human being whose mind was open, whose life was devoted to openness and educating his fellow people, one of the framers of our great Constitution which this President has methodically trod upon and sought to change to the detriment of all.
What irony to allow President Bush a place at the home of Thomas Jefferson! When will it all end, when will decent citizens say enough of this President, stay home until the 20th of January 2009?.
We must not allow the President the opportunity to cast his dark shadow at this venue and on this date. How can this man even pretend to use such a venue, which symbolizes in every way Thomas Jefferson, to address select Republican citizens but not all the citizens of our nation?
I have registered a complaint with The Thomas Jefferson Foundation as well and hope that the Daily Progress will take note and work to disinvite the President.
Sincerely,
Michael Lodwick

Dear People,
I have called Monticello and told them to uninvite this Bush liar. He brings nothing but shame to our place. Who in heaven invited this man to this important place.
Speaking up on the hill on the fourth of July is a disgrace for all of us who seem to think special of Thomas Jefferson’s place.<

Hi,
I’ve called Monticello to voice my disappointment that Ken Bruns has been replaced as speaker for the ceremonies on July 4 with a person who doesn’t appear to take the Constitution of the United States very seriously. I think the Thomas Jefferson Foundation should tell him they already have a speaker.
Sincerely,
Mary Hanna
I write as a Virginian, the father of four graduates of Mr. Jefferson’s university and of another who is an alumnus of the university Mr. Jefferson himself attended.
I have just spoken with Emily of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation to register our family’s dismay that President George W. Bush has been invited to speak at Monticello on July 4th. I cannot imagine a greater insult to Mr. Jefferson, who played such a huge role in securing for us the freedoms we enjoy as citizens of this great Commonwealth and country. George W. Bush at Monticello? Desecration of what until now has been hallowed ground.
Emily explained that the Foundation had decided that it could invite the office of the president, without appearing to invite the present incumbent. That distinction is one worthy of the lawyers whom the Bush administration hired to justify torture, ignoring the dictum of another Virginian, Patrick Henry, that practices like the rack and screw must be left behind in the Old World.
Those who invited the president to Charlottesville to help celebrate the Declaration of Independence, which asserted basic freedoms that Mr. Bush has now curtailed, dishonor Mr. Jefferson in a most offensive way, scandalize our children and grandchildren, and desecrate Monticello itself.
A shameful day for the Commonwealth.

I hate him, my father and mother and the rest of my family hates him. My friends hate him. My coworkers hate him. The staff person at Monticello that she understood me completely and they were only honoring the office of presidency and not Bush. I don’t want him or Cheney to come to Virginia to speak.
Let him speak at John Adam’s home where he has more in common with the President who signed into law the Alien and Sedition Acts than with the author of the Declaration of Independence.
