Permanent Change

Dark and early at 6 a.m. I pushed the button on my old computer for the first time in a new position and time slot: Say good morning to Early Web Boy.

In an effort to bring the news cycle ever closer to your sleep cycle, we at the D-P, and by we I mean me, will search the Associated Press and news networks and keep an ear to the happenings of fire and police and weather in the area so that you don’t have to. When you wake up, simply turn us on.

Of course, new tricks are hard for old dogs and I’m no different. Getting up early is not as easy as it was when I hit the streets of Minneapolis-St. Paul or Denver to do traffic reports back in my younger days. I’ve gotten accustomed to snoozing on the dog side of the bed for some years, lolligagging about until 6 a.m. and then puttering and putzing around the kitchen and doing a quick blog thing before crawling into the shower and getting all wet in the literal sense of the phrase.

I made it, though. Sitting down with a decaf and Pandora.com playing “Splendid Isolation” on my Warren Zevon station, I muddled through my first morning of bizarre computer coding, slow servers and dueling scanners.

Still, it’s a change. I’ve been grooving for several years as the columnist boy, checking out coffee shops and doing pretty much whatever I can get away with. Now reality will come crashing down upon my head like Thor’s 200-pound hammer of righteousness, bludgeoning my trapezoidial peg into the rhumbus-shaped hole of news every morning, just like it did when I was 20 or 30.

It won’t be the first time. I may be an old dog but this is new gig is just an old trick with a new twist.

Rock on puppies and wake up early. I’ll be here giving it to you every morning.

Monday through Friday, of course.
