Building on and off the field at St. Anne’s

The area surrounding the St. Anne’s-Belfield turf field is nearly unrecognizable from its previous state. A new academic building sits on one side of the field, with mounds of dirt and construction equipment on the other, across the road that winds through campus.

St. Anne’s field hockey coach Brian Bartholomew hopes his team is also built up significantly from last year’s squad, which won just two of 16 games. On Friday afternoon, the Saints picked up their first win of the season in their home opener, trouncing Virginia Episcopal, 6-0.

Senior forward Mollie Reese carried the load in the first half, scoring three of the Saints’ first four goals to record a hat trick before the break. Elise Van Arsdale, younger sister of former
St. Anne’s lacrosse star and current UVa freshman Owen Van Arsdale, added the other goal for a 4-0 advantage.

“[Reese is] a senior captain, and I think this was a breakout game for her,” Bartholomew said. “The key was that we controlled the game in the midfield, and Elise Van Arsdale was who controlled it.”

Lauren Gamper and Maddie Brayman scored in the second half for the Saints (1-1, 1-1 LIS), who did some hard-nosed work in front of the goal, poking home rebounds on half of their goals.

Gamper’s goal in the first minute of the second half came on a missed clear from Bishops goalkeeper Ife Olayinka. With the game in hand, Bartholomew took the opportunity to clear his bench and get his younger players some game action.

“I thought the depth in our squad, from first to 16th, there was no let-off,” he said.

St. Anne’s, which took a 2-1 loss in its opener against Covenant on Sept. 3, goes on the road for two games next week against Collegiate and Walsingham Academy.
