Charlottesville just wants to improve every week

A lot of football coaches will tell you their team’s mistakes are a result of being young and inexperienced, no matter how many juniors and seniors are on the roster and in the starting lineup. When Charlottesville coach Chris Fraser says it, he means it.

The Black Knights head into a game at Albemarle on Friday after having lost their first two games by a combined score of 111-6. But Fraser was remarkably upbeat after last week’s 56-0 loss to James Monroe, remembering that he started a sophomore quarterback and a freshman running back. The Knights leading receiver, Darius Watson, was also a sophomore. In fact, only one senior touched the ball for Charlottesville and that was running back Davonte Taylor, who had six carries.

Fraser remembers that last year the Albemarle game was one that sparked a bit of a turnaround for the Knights, being the first of three-straight victories. He’s hoping that it can do a little of the same for his team this year.

“It’s tough because we have a young team with not much confidence,“ Fraser said. “Our goal with all these young guys is that we got to get better every week. The same thing happened to us last year. We took it on the chin to Lee, we took it on the chin to James Monroe and then we came out and beat Albemarle.“

Albemarle, on the other hand, snapped a long losing streak with a win over Western Albemarle last week and could have some momentum coming in. Even if this week doesn’t result in a win for Charlottesville, Fraser is taking a look at the long-term future. His top four playmakers—Watson, QB Benj Wilhelm, RB Chris Thurston and WR Ethan Best—should all be back next year. In the meantime, the Knights are looking for anything that can serve to build confidence.

“Our kids just don’t believe right now,“ Fraser said. “We’ve got to be able to help them to believe.“
