Covenant volleyball rolling along

You’ll have to excuse the folks at the Covenant School if they are getting awfully excited about the Eagles volleyball team. Simply put, nobody has touched Covenant so far this year as it has raced out to a 6-0 start. On Sept. 2, Covenant cruised past Charlottesville in three games, 25-10, 25-16 and 25-10. The Eagles actually got a bit of a challenge Tuesday against Virginia Episcopal, who stayed within five points in the final two sets, but Covenant still won in three straight.

Thursday night it was a thrashing of Tandem Friends. Covenant won in three games once again, 25-8, 25-7 and 25-15. In those quick routs it can be tough to rack up any impressive statistics, but Emily Smethurst had 20 assists against Tandem and Katherine Rendleman has seven kills and nine aces over the past two matches.

In all, the Eagles have dropped just one set all season, but the true tests are yet to come. This Saturday Covenant travels to Roanoke for the North Cross Invitational. There it will face Hampton Roads Academy, which is 5-2. Later this month there is the rivalry game against St. Anne’s-Belfield, which is always a big one for the Eagles. Of course, Covenant has a good head start in preparation. STAB doesn’t even begin its season until this weekend.
