Monticello senior Jesse Ayres gets most of the attention when talking about high school running backs in Central Virginia, and rightfully so. But the heirs to Ayres throne as king of the ball carriers in the Charlottesville area might be a pair of freshmen who have been playing well and making a name for themselves.
At Orange, it was Isaiah Ferguson who had another fantastic showing last week against Fluvanna, rushing for 128 yards and two touchdowns . From the press box, Ferguson doesn’t look like a freshman. He has great vision and is tough to bring down. It’s not until you talk to him with his helmet and shoulder pads off that you can see he most definitely is a ninth-grader with a baby face and a frame that could probably add several pounds without losing a step.
“He does a really good job for being just a ninth-grader,“ Orange coach John Kayajanian said, understating Ferguson’s value for Orange as the Hornets try to continue their playoff push against Western Albemarle tonight. Ferguson adds balance to Orange’s spread offense that likes to get the ball to speedy wideouts Amir Waller and Tyler Seal on the outside.
The future is now at Orange, but at Charlottesville the Knights freshman running back is offering hope for the next few seasons. CHS has struggled through this season, still looking for its first win with a young and undersized squad, but freshman Chris Thurston has run well behind an offensive line that has had its struggles.
Last week against Monticello, Thurston carried 15 times for 94 yards. Thurston will likely get plenty of carried tonight against Fluvanna as the improving Black Knights try to control the ball against the Flucos. If Thurston and Co. can get the ground game going, it might be an opportunity for Charlottesville to get that first win.
