This was supposed to be a down year for Madison County after losing a senior class that guided the Mountaineers to a playoff appearance in football and state championship in boys basketball. Somebody forgot the tell the players that were left in Madison.
The Mountaineers lost several playmakers from last year’s team, including Mr. All-Everything Logan Terrell, and it didn’t look good for Madison early on after a loss to William Monroe. But somehow the Mountaineers enter the final week of the regular season with an 8-1 record. They’ve also already clinched a spot in the Region B, Division 1 playoffs and a share of the Bull Run District title. Madison even has a shot to do what it didn’t last year, beat nemesis Clarke County and win the district outright.
Senior Ralph Yates has stepped into Terrell’s role of star running back, but it’s been the passing game that has made a huge difference for Madison. Receivers Rashad Bolden and Travis Warren have had huge seasons and sophomore QB Dustin Farmer has shined.
Perhaps this group of Mountaineers got a little tired of hearing about how great last year’s seniors were.
“They’ve had to hear that all year and had a little chip on their shoulder – they’re going to come out and prove it where it needs to be proved, and that’s on the field,“ MCHS coach Stuart Dean told Media General correspondent Matt Rock after last week’s win over Manassas Park.
Game time for Madison is 7:30 Friday at Clarke County.
