Albemarle High School starting quarterback Lee Carneal was knocked out of the game in the first quarter during Friday’s loss to Monticello. It was a tough break for the Patriots. who lost their 11th game in a row, dating back to last season.
Carneal left with a wrist injury and Albemarle had go with senior Michael Bernardino at quarterback. Bernardino did an admirable job in a tough situation, but took a beating as he was forced to play both ways for three quarters. Now, the Patriots are waiting for word on just how bad Carneal’s injury was. Running back Micah Rivers talked to Carneal on the phone just before doing an interview with reporters after the game Friday, and at that time Carneal told his teammate he didn’t think his wrist was broken. Reached over the weekend, AHS coach Mike Alley said heavy swelling made it tough for doctors to tell if there was a fracture or not. Alley said he thought they would have a diagnosis by Tuesday.
Meanwhile the Patriots are getting ready for this week’s game against another cross-country rival, Western Ablemarle.
