Sun, sand and softball

Louisa County wrapped up its week at the Grand Strand Softball Classic with a 4-2 win over Logan High School (West Virginia) on Friday afternoon.
The Lions, in their third trip to the Myrtle Beach tournament, posted a 3-2 record during their stay, with other wins over Charleston Catholic (West Virginia) and Myrtle Beach.
Louisa dropped a 4-0 decision to Ryle High School (Kentucky) on Tuesday, and lost 4-3 to Mount de Sales (Maryland) Wednesday. Both of those teams were dominated by seniors.
By contrast, the Lions have no seniors on their roster, and just four returning players from last season—Meagan Lesser, Jessica Agee, Brooke Chewning and Chelsea Fisher.
“Our girls got to see some really good pitching. It was good for them – we are very young,” said Louisa coach Susan Sharpe. “It gave them a good idea of what stronger teams are going to look like in the district.”
According to Sharpe, Lesser pitched well all week. Last season, the junior right-hander boasted a 1.77 ERA and recorded 113 strikeouts, and was a first team All-Jefferson District selection.
Chewning, a sophomore catcher, allowed just one stolen base on the week. Chewning batted .249 last season with 12 RBI, 5 triples and 3 doubles.
Louisa (6-2) returns to action on Tuesday, as it entertains Western Albemarle at 5 p.m.
