Woodberry Forest calls off Oak Ridge game

Woodberry Forest has canceled its home game scheduled for Friday, Nov. 5 against Oak Ridge (N.C.) Military Academy.

Woodberry canceled the game Monday after coach Clint Alexander’s e-mails to Oak Ridge officials went unreturned. Alexander had expressed concern for his players’ safety due to Oak Ridge’s use of postgraduate players and rough play in previous games.

Alexander said he received several concerned e-mails from parents after a recent Oak Ridge game was called off in the first quarter after an injury.

When reached on Monday, Oak Ridge coach and athletic director Otis Yelverton declined comment, saying he had not heard about Woodberry’s decision.

The Tigers are the fourth Oak Ridge opponent to cancel their tilt with the Cadets, joining Virginia private schools Carlisle and Hargrave Military Academy and the Raleigh (N.C.) Eagles, a non-profit program.
