Eastbound and westbound I-64 are open at Afton Mountain and traffic is returning to normal after a sudden snow squall and freezing temperatures turned the road into a vehicular hockey rink this morning.
At one point both directions of I-64 were stopped and backups were close to two miles westbound and four miles eastbound. Dozens of cars and trucks slid off the interstate and side roads due to ice and snow. Police had closed U.S. 250 in both directions on either side of Afton Mountain, but both directions have since reopened.
