And no, I’m not kidding. Because if there’s one thing everybody in Augusta County knows — and I mean everybody —- it’s that when it comes to sports rivalries (and probably tiddly-winks, Risk or anything else you can compete in) they don’t get any better than Riverheads against Buffalo Gap.
So I’ve come to this conclusion and I’m going to hot key this phrase (I’ll set it to F5, I think): “Sara Lamneck notched a double-double.“
Yeah, yeah.We know it finished the Southern Valley regular season undefeated. That was, after all, one of the goals this workman like R.E. Lee girls team has set for themselves.
And, sure, the Lee Ladies ended the season ranked No. 10 in the Virginia AP Poll. But think about this — Buffalo Gap girls ended the season ranked No. 6 in Group A. The team that beat them twice and took the regular-season Shenandoah title? Well, Stonewall never cracked the top 10. So now you know how much that farce is worth.
It’s OK to admit if Leonardo Lopez’s shoot-from-the-hip-and-the-critics-be-damned style of talking rubbed you the wrong way. This is America and one man’s way of life is another’s way not to be, so disagreeing with how Lopez said things is perfectly OK. (Not that Lopez would care any how what you thought of his razor sharp tongue.)
Toggling between the butt-numbing bleachers and standing against a fence, I watched Justin Verlander give up one hit and lose to Clarke County. I watched Jake Peeling wrap his dad in a hug after pitching a no-hitter.
