Because all the Fort Defiance girls track team did was shut the naysayers up, look at the R.E. Lee girls track team—a heavily favored R.E. Lee girls team at that—and say, “No, not yours,“ and win coach Dave Stewart his sixth district championship in three sports the past two shool years.
Yeah, can you top that? Of course not. Stop trying.
Sorry, that headline isn’t a typo on my part. Blame that one of the Staunton School system’s newsletter obtained by this sports columnist that thanks Paul Hatcher—who is retiring from teaching and still mulling his basketball future—for his years of service to the school.
Facing a Riverheads team that the world forgot as it managed to kick, claw and scrape its way into the annual Shenandoah District baseball logjam (and, really, let’s think about making “logjam” an official part of this district’s name and, no, I’m not kidding), Buffalo Gap needed a good pitching outing to win its third straight regular-season title.
The Bison got it and a little help from a few friends in Fishersville (but we’ll get to that later.)
