You know like, what took you so long Waynesboro and Stuarts Draft to realize that what you’re doing Friday night and Jan 16 with your basketball teams (girls, boys doubleheaders at the schools) is the right way to go?
Mere days ago we raised our glasses full of the bubbly and bid adieu to 2008 and all that was wrong with it and welcomed 2009 hoping against hope that, yeah, maybe some things would go right this year.
The biggest New Year gift of all came via e-mail Monday from the Waynesboro Athletic Office. And you heard plenty of Southern Valley District fans cheer a little bit. Looks like the Power That Be at Waynesboro and Stuarts Draft high schools have seen the light and, in a move we never expected to happen despite constant pleas that it had to happen, the two schools will play their varsity basketball games on the same night at the same site.
How to label the 2008 sports year in Augusta County is both an easy and, let’s be honest here, hurtful choice.
As much as we would like to tell you that 2008 was a year kids did great things, brought pride to local high schools and gave it all on the field, it’s sad to admit that it was hoity-toity administrators, schedule makers that couldn’t schedule-make themselves out of an over-boiled sausage casing and parents, sigh, yes, “those” kind of parents, that ruled the year.
If you wanted to sum up 2008, call it the Year of Adults Acting All Wild.
Ideas? I loves ‘em. (And yes, I meant to type “loves” instead of “love.“)
Ideas are where all good things start and, even if said idea is still just a Word document sent as an e-mail attachment one night last week, it’s the step in the right direction. And this idea, straight from the mind, onto the computer and sent in an e-mail from R.E. Lee defensive coordinator Mike Roark, is a doozy

And it’s not a PlayStation3, the Blade Runner deluxe edition on Blu-Ray or a 65-inch, plasma-screen TV.
How do I know this? Because those three things are what I both want and need. No. Not yours.

Toggling between the butt-numbing bleachers and standing against a fence, I watched Justin Verlander give up one hit and lose to Clarke County. I watched Jake Peeling wrap his dad in a hug after pitching a no-hitter.
