Upon Further Review

If you want to see the future of Waynesboro football, you have to take a gander at the past. Most notably last season and, to be more specific, about an hour before the Little Giants’ first game in 2007 against Turner Ashby.

If Jay Thompson was anything in the batters box and out in the field, he was intense.

Hardly saw him smile (even after wins) and never saw him goofing off. What you did see Thompson do in his years on the Waynesboro varsity team was lose his cool every now and again. Often times it was just a stare toward the umpire or toward an opposing player, the kind of stare that, no doubt, you were glad not to be on the receiving end of.

Give Tom Cummings this much—the man that chose to head right into the maelstrom and take over Fort Defiance’s wrestling program after the questionable ousting of Terry Waters decided he was going to say all the right things Monday.

Hours before heading to Fort to meet a concerned and angry Indian wrestling family (and you can’t blame them for being either now can you?) Cummings told sports reporter Corine Gatti that he was going to extend an “olive branch” to Waters.

“Terry has a great feeder program with the Battlefield Wrestling Club. That’s what makes our high school programs and youth a success,“ Cummings said. “Maybe, I can offer him assistance, or vice-versa.“

Just some thoughts on a few things from a slack-jawed local sports blogger (no Josh Hamilton ESPN rehash here, folks) who is still trying to recover from a week eating and watching baseball in his hometown of Chicago.
