Hornets prove a point: They’re darn good
In a gym filled with purple socks, purple shirts and mourning hearts the Wilson Memorial volleyball team proved one thing and one thing only.
It’s the team to beat in Augusta County.
Hands. Down. Lock. The. Thread.
Purple, you ask? It was to honor Evanne Coffman, a Wilson student that would have been a senior this year, who died on March 4. So with those heavy hearts and Coffman’s family in attendance, the Green Hornets provided the best thing a team can do in the face of sadness—beat the pants off your second county rival in as many matches.
More importantly for the All-Grown-Up Hornets, not only were the wins over county mates, the two wins this week were against fellow Shenandoah District teams. That gives the Hornets the victory in the first go-around through Augusta County. It also puts them in the driver’s seat the rest of the way.
The match provided the kind of atmosphere not seen since Waynesboro glory days. A full house. Students shaking the gym with every point and, of course, Kala Guy’s signature banshee yell. Yep, like we said, this Wilson team is all grown up.
So what does Wilson coach Kim Claytor—a coach who lives by a have-fun-on-the-court-or-get-off-my-team mantra—do when she’s surrounded by a rowdy student section hungry for a win and facing a tough Buffalo Gap squad that managed to stay in the first two games?
“I said, ‘It’s time to bring out the power and end this thing,‘ “ she said.
The won the final game 25-15. She talks, they listen. Do the math, people.
Everything else, however, is up to the team and 11 matches into the season, that team is producing.
And another thing: Seriously, did Kala Guy have that sit-down chat with Clark Kent yet. You know, so she learns how to hide her secret identity better and learn that, well, you shouldn’t be carrying your Superman sweater with you when you leave the locker room. That really kind of gives it away, Kala. Just saying.
I mean, for crying out loud, the Hornets were down 12-1 in the second game, tied it up at 16 and went on to win 25-21.
That kind of comeback? With that kind of crowd behind you? Yeah, I doubt Claytor had to say a thing to those girls. Not a thing at all.
Of course, this comes two nights after Buffalo Gap pulled off their own comeback win over Page County. A match that saw the Bison down 2-0 before getting shocked to life and winning the next three games.
So, my question is, can anybody in the Shenandoah challenge Wilson?
Of course, the bigger question is, will Wilson Memorial finally be able to get out of Region B? Well, they’ll cross that bridge when it’s built, but I’d sure like to know where that bridge is going to take this team.
Down 12-1 folks. Say it again, down 12-1.
Fort Defiance sweeps R.E. Lee. Fort Defiance beats R.E. Lee 25-6 in Game 1. Fort Defiance coach Lynn Alexander says her team “played one of the best first games I’ve ever seen them play.“
Yeah, ya think, coach?
“We haven’t had noise in this gym all year so that was surprising,“ said Stuarts Draft volleyball coach Kami Meeteer after the Cougars beat the Gobblers. “We’ve had support, but just not loud.“
Man, where has that awesome student section at Stuarts Draft gone? Maybe they’re all out back with the once-great Waynesboro student section. Who knows? Do they have to stay in their seats at Draft? Just asking.
I agree and disagree. Riverheads did play alot better than Draft did last week, which is sure cause for them to be ahead of Draft after the collapse Draft had the second half, but you also have to think about what you are meaning by Power Rankings. If you mean who played this best the past week then yea Draft should be lower, if you mean who is the better team, then I would think there game a few weeks ago would come into play. Like SDCougarFan said she doesnt know who is better now, well we really dont, but just like Riverheads is getting better, Draft could be getting better or both could be getting worse. But I think that if Draft comes out and has a good game against Spotswood no matter what Riverheads done, then the game earlier in the season needs to be taken into account.

The Power Rankings are based on what team is better that week. Sure, I take some past games into account, but I also take where I think this team is heading into account as well. Right now, Riverheads looks to be heading higher up the ladder than Stuarts Draft. Of course, that could change this week as well.
Actually, this is one SD fan that thinks Sacco’s power rankings are right on the money. I wouldn’t have put Riverheads ahead of Draft a week ago but the fact of the matter is that the Big Red played 2 halves of good football last Friday and Draft played only 1. Is Riverheads a better team than Draft? I don’t know. But I think they played better football last week than we did and thus should be bumped up ahead. Just my 2 cents which is about all its worth!
BTW Sacco, don’t you owe me a Fresca??

They still make Fresca and people still drink it? How about a Tab?
