I know what Riverheads’ girls need for Christmas

And it’s not a PlayStation3, the Blade Runner deluxe edition on Blu-Ray or a 65-inch, plasma-screen TV.

How do I know this? Because those three things are what I both want and need. No. Not yours.

What Riverheads girls basketball team needs over the holiday break is two hours in the gym per day doing nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, other than shooting free throws.

Shoot them with their eyes open. Shoot them with their eyes closed. Shoot them granny style (you know, when you tuck the ball between your legs with both hands and underhand-toss it toward the net), shoot them Bill Cartwright style, heck, you can shoot them with your back to the net if you so desire.

Just shoot them. For two hours a day. That’s all.

Because if the Gladiators have any hope of making a dent in the Shenandoah District race that starts in full force next month, then they have to do a whole heck of a lot better than 14 for 31 from the

charity

stripe of death, doom and despair.

OK, so let’s make this happen.

Question for you: Why is it that Jeremy Hartman, a fine girls basketball coach over at R.E. Lee and the first semblance of consistency the Lee Ladies have had since Dan Bonner left for his day job, can say, “They still make bonehead mistakes from time to time,“ and not a single R.E. Lee fan publicly complains about it?

The answer: Because Hartman knows what he’s talking about. He knows the amount of talent he has on this team. He knows that, despite being young, this current crop of Lee Ladies are the group that is going to lead this team back to the state-stage promised land.

The other answer: He doesn’t coach at Fort Defiance. ‘Nuff said.

Speaking of Fort: At last weekend’s Titan Wrestling Classic in Richmond, Stuart Roes won a gold medal. Expected.

At last weekend’s Titan Wrestling Classic, Stuart Roes got a nasty cut over his eye. In wrestling, expected.

At last weekend’s Titan Wrestling Classic, Stuart Roes got stitched up by doctors who were at the meet and continued to wrestle. Of course, this is expected.

Stuarts Roes is senior at R.E. Lee. Stuarts Roes used to wrestle at Fort Defiance.

So, let’s ask The Powers That Be: Was the new direction you wanted to take the wrestling program south? You know, the same direction Roes transferred schools to.

We’ll let you guys discuss that amongst yourselves.

Hey Riverheads. You shooting those free throws yet?

You know me, just asking.
