I know what you did this summer
OK, I really don’t. But for reasons known only to the slack-jawed sports columnist gods, I felt the need to make a movie pun that would have bee funny, oh, I don’t know, back in 1997. But I digress.
Finally, it’s football. The one thing we spend all summer looking forward to. Or at least we start looking forward to it when, come August, you’re so sick of baseball you’re ready to start hurling white chalk.
Anyway, OK, we’ll keep our Return To The Daily Pooch Punt Short today and just pick the winner of tonight’s light high school football schedule. Then, starting Monday, we’ll be hitting the blog hardcore. We’re talking weekly Power Rankings and, of course, the Daily Pooch Punt (replete with smart-aleck jokes that few will laugh at) and much, much more.
On a side note (if I may), let’s hit up Wednesday’s as the Mail Bag Day. So go ahead, click the e-mail link to fill the DPP Mail Trough or go ahead and comment below. Trash talking, as always, is welcome. Just keep it clean and, remember, if your coach gets angry because you or one of your buddies is giving your opponent bulletin board material, that’s your problem. Not mine.
Fort Defiance at R.E LeeThe Leemen bring a ton to the table this season and are one of the two favorites to win the Southern Valley title. (Rockbridge, of course, being the other.) Fort Defiance, one of two SV teams to finish with a 1-9 record (we’ll get to the other one later) is just trying to win back some respect.
The bottom line here is Fort Defiance does not have the athletes to match up with R.E. Lee. Who’s gonna stop Dae’ Quan Scott? Who’s gonna Terrell Mickens?
Tough questions to answer and tough game for the Indians to win.
Broadway at Stuarts Draft
The darlings of 2007 (and rightfully so, I mean, when you beat Harrisonburg you earn every piece of heart-shaped box candy you get), Stuarts Draft takes to the field missing a ton of guys from last year’s squad. That could mean tough times for the Cougars. However, let’s not kid ourselves here, attitude has a lot to do with a football season and if Rod Bowers has done anything over at Draft entering his third year at the helm, it’s turning that attitude around.
The Cougars think they can win every game and the addition of the option on the offensive side of the ball usually only leads to exciting things. The loss of Isaiah Miller and the Taylor’s hurts the Cougars, but Broadway lost a good running back of its own.
You pick this game. It’s going either way. (But I’d go with Broadway. But, hey, that’s just me.)
Waynesboro at Turner Ashby
It’s really easy to count to one. And Waynesboro, as the other SVD team with one win, would like to start counting higher. But it’s not going to happen on the road, in Bridgewater, on a Friday night.
Sure, the Little Giants played TA great in their home opener last season. But if there’s one thing Waynesboro is not known for it’s traveling well. And the lack of fans on the road (and home for that matter) makes playing any place a tough environment.
This one is going TA’s way.
Back Monday with more.
