It’s the Friday Night Football Picks

The only way to describe last week’s debacle known as local football is to use the word “bloodbath.“

So, there, I’ll use it. Then, I’ll follow it up with my picks. OK? Good. Here we go.

R.E. Lee (5-1, 1-0) at Waynesboro (1-5, 0-2)

Can’t be too good for the Little Giants when an angry-off-its-first-loss-of-the-season R.E. Lee team comes to the River City. But, here’s the catch. Lee’s defense was exposed for what it is—soft at times—and the loss to Turner Ashby on Monday shows that, yes, someone can beat the Leemen.

But in order for it to be Waynesboro, a lot of things are going to have to go right for the Little Giants and an equal number of things are going to have to go wrong for Lee.

I don’t see much happening either way to give Waynesboro the win and something tells me Lee just might dump another 40-plus points on the board.

Buffalo Gap (4-0, 0-0) at Covington (0-5, 0-0)

The only questions here are: How many yards and scores will Pickle Nuckols grab? How many quarters will the starters play? And when will coach Rob Maxwell call off the dogs?

Here are the answers: 212 and 2, 3, Four minutes in. That is all.

Gap wins huge.

Riverheads (2-2, 0-0) at Bath County (2-2, 0-0)

If Cory Sandridge plays, give the edges to the Gladiators. If he’s still bruised up and stays on the sidelines, you gotta pick Bath.

Did you like that non-answer? Of course you did.

James River (2-3, 0-0) at Wilson Memorial (1-3, 0-0)

Sure, the Green Hornets picked up their first win of the season last week. And, sure, it was against Covington. And, sure, Covington isn’t a powerhouse. But a win over anybody can do funny things and that’s exactly what Wilson needed.

Now will those things carry over against James River?

Probably not, this team is still too young and too small. Go with James River.

Fort Defiance (1-4, 0-2) at Broadway (2-3, 0-0)

The Indians, one of the bigger disappointments in the Southern Valley (come on, admit it. You thought they were going to be better than this too, didn’t you) against a team that looked good in a season-opening win against Stuarts Draft.

On the road, or at home, this game does not bode well for Fort.

Broadway wins by 10.

Stuarts Draft (3-3, 1-0) at Turner Ashby (3-2, 1-0)

Not a good time to catch the Knights as they come off a big road win over R.E. Lee. Not a good time to catch the Cougars either, who looked dismal in a 7-0 loss to Spotswood last week.

Knights have their stuff together, evident by the win over Lee. The Cougars are fighting to get theirs back after that game last Friday.

The Cougars will hang tough, but TA is just too good this year.

You bet I’ll have some thoughts early Saturday (you know, like last week) about the football Friday. So check back.
