Question: Is Lee’s Scott still shaking (how about them haters?)
The goal wasn’t to get R.E. Lee’s Daquaa Scott to apologize. Really. She had no reason to apologize to anybody not wearing a Graham jersey and, chances are, she really had no reason to apologize to any of the G-Girls either.
But, when you saw Scott’s hands and lower arms still shaking after the Lee Ladies’ 52-27 Group AA, Division 3 quarterfinal win, you just knew you had to ask.
So, why are you shaking?
“Oh,“ she said, taking a moment to look at her hands wiggling away like she was playing some super-small version of Guitar Hero, “I’m sorry.“
Um, sorry for what?
Sorry for throwing around any and all Graham players that tried to post up with her in the paint? Maybe. But that’s no reason to apologize to some slack-jawed sports blogger.
Sorry for making anybody in a G-Girl uniform look like a rag doll? Um, yeah. No reason for that Miss Scott. That’s your job after all, is it not?
And while every body in the James Madison University Convocation Center was flat out amazed at what freshman Angela Mickens did, they should have been just as impressed with Scott’s play.
I mean, all the sophomore did in the biggest game of her prep career (so far, folks, so far) was pour in 10 points — all coming from the paint and the free-throw line — and pull down eight boards with five coming off the offensive glass. Even bigger, however, was her presence down low. A presence made even bigger by the return of fellow post player Kendra Scott.
With G-Girls strapped to her back, Daquaa Scott tossed them around the paint and bullied her way to the hoop. Graham, pure and simple, did not have an answer nor a body that could stop Scott.
“I just know I got to be strong,“ she said in between giggles and apologizes for her shaking hands and arms. “I just know I got to score.“
Yeah, but why are you still shaking, Miss Scott?
“I’m sorry,“ she said. “I don’t know. I guess I’m just still hyper. I guess I’m just happy.
“Listen to those fans,“ she said, pointing down the hallway where a group of blue-clad Lee faithful waited, smiling, for the girls to exit the locker room hallway. “You can hear them. They’re proud of us.
“I’m proud of my girls,“ she added. “We weren’t supposed to be here. We were supposed to be here next year. We’ll, we’re here now and we’ll be here next year too.“
Um, don’t forget about the year after that and probably the year after that was well.
“I’m sorry,“ she said.
Stop apologizing! You’re going to Richmond.
And another thing: The most telling moment of the night game in the fourth quarter when, after spending most of the third quarter grabbing a little R and R on the bench, Mickens jogged to the scorer’s table and checked in. When the horn blew and she came back onto the floor, two guys in the Graham student section located directly behind press row said it all.
“Oh, [expletive],“ one of them said. “Here she comes.“
Lock. The. Thread.
Really? Was all of that “Just Muffie”? Not this time. Because, while what she did during the regular season may have been just Muffin Being Muffin. Her 28 points Friday that single handedly outscored the G-Girls raised more than enough eye brows.
“We were hoping she would get 30,“ said Daquaa Scott. “Se was going on a rampage out there.“
How about that 3 at the buzzer from Mickens? You know, just to really hammer the point home that the Convocation will be her house as long as the Lee Ladies keep making it to states in the three years left in her prep career.
Oh how about that acrobatic layup where, somehow, some way, she managed to push the ball up and into the net for three the good old fashioned way?
Yeah, you can classify that stuff as solid. Right?
Thought so.
Last note: On VirginiaPreps.com, some poster said our headline “Mickens 28, Graham 27” was a “smart a**“ headline. Really?
Um, that’s what happened. Those are called “facts” not “smart a**“ headlines. What do you expect from numskulls who use their free time hiding behind aliases and hating on a 15-year-old girl. Yeah, you’re a big fella, ain’t ya? Now get back in your mother’s basement and play Worlds of Warcraft, will ya.
Meanwhile, the Lee Ladies are packing for Richmond.
