When I read this today, I honestly could not believe what I was reading. I was lucky enough to be schooled in Augusta County, teach high school mathematics in Augusta County, and coach in Augusta County. So I have some experience with the school system. As many know, I now teach in the state of Connecticut. I have had the experience of seeing two totally different ways that school systems are operated. Cutting any JV sports is totally unacceptable! Sports do so much, for so many, within our school systems. Playing sports is one of the major factors in helping students maintain good grades by their teachers, coaches, and especially their parents. I have an idea how Augusta County could save thousands of dollars. Before cutting services to Augusta County students, those in charge of the school system need to look at getting rid of the overabundance of central office positions. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent on county central office positions that many school systems throughout the country do without. Augusta County’s school system spends thousands of dollars on central office positions that other school systems make due without them. Just some rambling thoughts of someone who read this and was at first startled, then outraged, and finally saddened that cutting JV sports was even being bantered about. Trust me as someone who taught and coached in Augusta County for over ten years, first look at saving money by cutting useless central office positions before cutting things that are good for kids.
