Week 2 Picks (now with more ‘pretty good’ volleyball, or something like that)
The defending Group A, Division 1 champs are finally in action tonight as Pickle Nuckols leads the Bison onto the field against Bath County in Swoope. A heated Augusta County rivalry is on tap, Waynesboro’s second-year coach hosts the team he left in Crozet and R.E. Lee plays a team it battled with twice and beat both times last year (including the playoffs).
Yep, Week 2 kicks things off proper. You got your picks, I got mine and here they are.
Bath County at Buffalo Gap
Ryan Sheridan, the guy slated to replace Travis Morris at quarterback for the Bison, is still out after a car accident but Nuckols, who ran roughshod over opponents last year, is bigger and stronger. Plus, it’s at Gap, a football crazy “town” that will fill the stands to welcome their defending champs back to the field. Don’t underestimate that intangible here. Go with Gap.
R.E. Lee at Alleghany
It’s Dae’Quan Scott’s team. He knows it. Coach David Tibbs knows it. The rest of the Leemen know it. Cut down on the penalties and shore up on defense and the Leemen should grab the win. It’s an early-season test but one the Leemen can pass with flying colors if they keep their heads.
Western Albemarle at Waynesboro
A week after being helped off the field in a loss to Turner Ashby, Little Giant running back Steven Brown will be on the field tonight. But still missing is Terrell Thompson, the speed the Brown’s power, and while it would be nice for Waynesboro to have both of those guys out there, this isn’t your daddy’s Western Albemarle team. Coach Steve Isaacs would love nothing more than to get a win over his former squad and the Little Giants would love to give it to him.
We’re picking Waynesboro to snag its first win of the season tonight.
Stuarts Draft at Wilson Memorial
The Great Unknown (Wilson) against the Great Replacements (Stuarts Draft). The Green Hornets had to replace most of their offensive line and remain a question mark as to what they have and what they can actually do. The Cougars, however, after losing half its team to graduation, played well in a loss to Broadway last week. Don’t expect a repeat of last year when unsportsmanlike penalties had Cougar coach Rod Bowers an eyelash away from pulling his team off the field. But do expect a repeat of the rock-em-sock-em battle. If Draft hopes to win, it’ll have to keep a lead of more than three points since Wilson place kicker Ben Hopewell can hit it from anywhere on the field. Expect the Cougars, however, to accomplish that goal and pick up a seven-point win.
Go with Stuarts Draft.
And another thing: Remember, Waynesboro students, if you’re watching the game you have to remain in the stands. Sorry. No fun for you at a football game.
You go, Erin Brown.
Don’t be fooled by Waynesboro getting swept at the hands of Stuarts Draft in volleyball. Nope. Not at all. The coming-off-a-down-season Little Giants were in every game (25-20, 26-24, 25-22) and need more to time to mesh as a team.
“We have a lot of young players in key role positions,“ said second-year Giants coach Lori Aleshire. “Once we start working a little more as a team we can push over that hump, but we have to work to get over the hump.“
Betcha those girls want to get over that hump pretty quickly.
Betcha Aleshire wants them to even quicker.
