Week 4 Football Picks: Of course it’s all local
Sorry, not going to hide under my hat today and throw salvos at NFL players that probably don’t read this paper or any other paper in the county. Not that you would care anyway if I felt Terrell Owens was a pud or Chad Johnson (or whatever the heck his name is these days) looks kind of dumb with this whole name thing. But hey, the way I look at it is if I throw shots at athletes I don’t deal with on a regular basis (or at all, for that matter) then I just play into the sports writing stereotype that we’re all spineless pencil necks. You know, like some guys out there.
With that said, the Waynesboro administration’s rule of making students sit the stands is a joke and whoever doesn’t have the sand to realize that high schoolers these days are nothing like the high schoolers of the 1990s, well, that’s their fault. It’s pretty simple. Sorry, I’ll refrain from making an obese actress joke that, I don’t know, would have been funny in 2005, which is the last time the Little Giants held onto the coveted Ball. (See, now that’s what they call a “segue.“ Look it up.)
OK, time for my picks (you know you love them):
The Battle for the Ball
Waynesboro at Stuarts Draft
Waynesboro showed a truckload of heart last week, coming back to beat Covington. The Cougars, meanwhile, look every bit as good as last year despite losing (you know the drill) literally half its team (blah, blah, blah).
The Little Giants turned the ball over five times against Covington, that can’t happen against Stuarts Draft. Turn the ball over against Draft and you’re going to pay.
But the Draft defense will get tested again tonight against a Waynesboro team that can be explosive, evident by its 47 points against Covington. Draft’s offense is on a roll and it’s going to take a great defensive game for the Little Giants to come out on top.
Look for Draft to hold onto the ball again this year, but nowhere near the 52-0 whitewashing the Little Giants had to endure in the rain at home last season.
Unless, at some point tonight, a meteor comes down and ends all life as we know it, Buffalo Gap is winning this game.
(Crossing fingers and hoping meteor doesn’t come tonight, the wife’s making her famous meatloaf this weekend.)
Look for the Gladiators to hold onto the ball after using another week to get their offense in gear. Two fumbles against Stuarts Draft last week could be the only fumbles this team loses all year. If they follow that trend, they’ll pick up the win and everybody will be happy in Greenville with the team’s first victory of the season.
We know the Green Hornets’ story—too small and too young. But that’s not saying they don’t have good crop out in Fishersville, because they do. All it’s saying is against a bigger Fort Defiance team, winning may be a problem.
In two losses this season, the Indians have looked on the cusp of breaking something open. Can’t say the same for Wilson after one game. But we’ll be able to tell more about this team after tonight. Even if the Hornets do lose. Gotta pick the Indians (again).
Two explosive teams that, despite the melancholy song and dance of “Please bring back our old Valley District” (sorry, not going to happen so deal with it, OK? I mean at what point are people going to stop lamenting something that is never coming back? Seriously, I don’t hear any of the players wishing it were back. Do you?), still want to win this game. Questions marks? Um, is Alex Owah going to play? Will R.E. Lee’s defense be able to contain the Blue Streaks?
Of course the Blue Streaks have to worry about containing Dae’Quan Scott and a just-as-dangerous Lee offense.
This game has been the Why-Can’t-We-Beat-These-Guys Bowl for Lee the past few seasons. It won’t be calling this game the same name next year.
Lee wins, but not even close to winning big.
Don’t forget to check out the Sunday Pooch Punt (sorry, it’s in our print edition only) and come back Monday for more irrelevant sports stuff and all-local conversation.
