What we know (not much) and what we don’t know (a whole lot)

So, word on the street is, prep basketball season starts tonight when Wilson Memorial and Waynesboro split up with the girls heading to Fishersville and the boys playing in Waynesboro.

(I know, playing at the same sight with the girls starting at 5 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 makes too much sense. I feel ya. I feel ya.)

Of course, things really go all out Tuesday night with a full slate of games. So, with that said, we’ll know a heck of lot more Wednesday about our local basketball teams.

“But what about tonight?“ you ask.

OK, here’s what we know. (And it’s not much. Yet.)

Waynesboro girls will struggle this season without Devon Brown. You remember her, don’t you? And the 2008-09 season will be second-year coach Secrett Stubblefield’s true test.

Can this team stay competitive? Will this team be receiving the same kind of beatings they were handing out last year?

The answers may be “No” and “Yes.“ But, like I said, we’ll know more tomorrow.

How about the Wilson Memorial girls? This team has four seniors on the squad that got a taste of the Group A, Division 2 tournament last season when, against all odds, the Green Hornets came together at the right time.

Megan Boysen, Lauren Dalton, Meg Emerson and, of course, Deidre Deacon (you know, the girl that almost single-handedly got this team out of the Shenandoah District and Region B? Yeah, her) all come back with a year of experience under their collective belts.

Against a Little Giants squad where, “Everything starts with [LaToya] Diggs,“ as Stubblefield said, we may have to wait for a true test of the Hornets.

As for the boys, I know this much:

1) The Little Giants lost that group of players — led by Nick Gore — that put the Waynesboro boys basketball program back on the map. So, who’s waiting in the wings?

2) The Green Hornets bring back Hunter Cullen who tore up the floor in summer ball.

3) They play tonight in Waynesboro.

There. That was easy. Starting Tuesday, though, things will get a lot more interesting.
