Wilson getting it going (but, come on, where’s the noise)
Wilson Memorial boys basketball team does what it’s supposed to do against Waynesboro. Actually, if we may be so bold, it did what is has to do if the Green Hornets hope to stay in contention when the lights turn on, the guys come out of the tree stands and Shenandoah District play gets rolling along.
They played like a patient and poised team in their 48-39 win over the Little Giants.
Basically, all the Green Hornets did was continue to do the math and continue to buy into what coach Rodney Cullen has been trying to sell all season.
Patience. Patience. Patience.
So this time, Hunter Cullen leads the way with 26 points (including a mind-boggling 10 to Waynesboro’s team total of 15 in the third quarter) and Dylan Hudson chips in double digits with 12. They play some defense, hit some free throws and even got a little help from the bench when Rodney Cullen called a timeout during a Waynesboro fourth-quarter run to calm the guys down. It worked. Wilson won.
All of this equaled a win for Wilson. Note, nowhere in that paragraph do you see the words “rush shots,“ “play selfish” or “not play defense.“
Man, it’s that easy Green Hornets. Way to do the math for a second night this week.
But an e-mail this morning from a Hornet fan got me thinking. The e-mailer said the student section — yes that area of the bleachers that old folks stay as far away from as possible and always bad mouth by calling them “rude” or “childish” or “immature,“ completely forgetting that high school sports belongs to those students, not you old fogeys (duh?!) — at Wilson Memorial was dead Wednesday. Present and accounted for, but dead.
So I did what any good sports columnist/blogger/loudmouth/journalist does — I checked the tape. And sad to say, the e-mailer was right. At the 1:04 mark of this video, Hunter Cullen steals the ball at half court, runs the table and hammers down a rim-rattling dunk that in any other gym in the Valley, would have brought the freakin’ house down.
Straight. Down. Folks.
Ah, but not in Fishersville on Wednesday against a future Southern Valley District foe.
Nah, Wednesday after Cullen’s dunk, it sounded like the fans were applauding a birdie at Augusta National and, trust us, watching golf is about as exciting as watching a pie bake (well, unless it’s apple, because those are really fun). No way should the applause for a dunk in high school be on the same decibel level as a golf match. Heck, when you watch the tape, at the back and to the left (no, this is not JFK the movie) you even see the Wilson student section.
They give it nothing. Noth. Ing.
So, word of advice Wilson Memorial basketball fans. Next time your team plays, try not to text message and meet girls during play. Wait until halftime. This isn’t a tea party, for crying out loud, it’s a basketball game.
Just saying.
And another thing: We all knew Waynesboro’s girls were going to take some lumps this year, but we also knew the Giants could win a game or two or three or, well, you get the idea. But one of those games we thought for sure they’d catch their lumps in would be against Wilson Memorial.
Think again.
It’s something Waynesboro hasn’t seen since, well, since before Devon Brown graced the court with her Division I presence and had I-Wish-My-Daughter-Was-Encased-In-Bubble-Wrap moms and I-Think-I-Can-Still-Be-A-Sports-Writer publishers up in arms over her hardnosed play.
What is it? It’s balanced scoring.
In their close loss to Rockbridge, the Team That Was Supposed to Stink This Year (Waynesboro), got 22 points from LaToya Diggs and five (count ‘em) five 3-pointers from Holy Jolie Dudley.
On Wednesday against Wilson, the Giants got 23 from Shanda Brown (yes, she’s Devon’s little sister, but this you know already) and, wait for it, wait for it, wait for it, picked up their first win of the season.
Of course, Brown has got to do better than her 3-for-11 performance from the free-throw line. Work on this, Brown. Work on this now.
Sure, Dudley was silent for the most part. Though she did hit a pivotal 3 during the game, but Diggs added 15 in the win.
Now, just think about it Giantdom, one night all three of these cornerstones are going to light it up on the same night. And, oh, what a night that’s going to be from the Team That Was Supposed To Smell Horribly This Year.
Of course, who is ready to challenge Waynesboro in the Southern Valley District? That’s the big question. Yes, this is no where close to last year’s version of Waynesboro, but who else in this district looks poised to take over where the Giants left off last year?
Hmm ... Lee you say? Well, we’ll find that out Friday night in Staunton.
Oh, and the boys play each other the same night in Waynesboro.
So, thanks to the dimwits in charge of the Southern Valley DoesStink, I have to ask: Has Daquaa and Dae’ Quan Scott’s parents figured out how to teleport back and forth yet?
How about the Mickens family?
Just asking.
Way to go ADs, you guys know your book learnin’, don’t ya?
Twits.

As for the Wilson student section being empty, let’s look at the bigger picture. The economy is getting weaker and weaker as I type. The students have to pay the full entry fee. They are not given a student discount. In the past, many of the student’s families purchased an annual season pass for a fee of $250. This would get them into any regular season home game for the year. This year the athletic director chose to change the season pass policy. If you want to purchase a season pass it is now $200 PER PERSON—no discount for senior citizens either!!! If you take an average family with 2 children you will now be forking over $800 versus the $250 in the past. Also, all the other augusta county high schools still offer the family season pass for $250 as well as individual passes at a significantly reduced rate. (please see their websites!!) This new policy has been a lose-lose for WMHS. If students/families do not go to the games, they certainly can’t support the concession stand, which is the largest money maker for the athletic department!! I hope they re-visit their idea on the season pass, not only for students but senior citizens!!
