Upon Further Review
It's a blog. It's called the Daily Pooch Punt because, well, I post to it five days a week. And you know how it is, if you're writing about sports you have to give it a "sporty" name. I picked "Pooch Punt" because...I don't remember, actually. Did I mention it's the original all-local, daily sports blog in Augusta County? Of course I did.
2. Can we comment?
Comment away, but any personal attacks, threats of violence, bad words or the like won't get published. Be smart, why say "J.E.B Stuart [expletive]" when a simple, "Thanks for coming though at Gettysburg, jerks" is a heck of a lot funnier. Oh, and if your coach, teammates or pals find out it's you giving the other team bulletin board material, well, that's your problem. Not mine.
3. Daily? Doesn't daily mean every day, not five days a week?
Leave the jokes to me.
4. What the best part about your job?
Walking through the I-still-think-I'm-Single aisle at Martins and trying to explain to a parent why I wrote something. They're talking and the whole time I'm thinking, "Man, all I wanted was some Easy-Cheez." Yeah, that's awesome.
5. Are you always this sarcastic?
6. When did you know you wanted to be a sports writer?
City Council meetings when I was in news were on Monday during the height of the Monday Night Wars between the WCW and then WWF. Need I say more? I think not.
7. And we should listen to you why?
Because one time I caught this sweet pass from Gino Vaccarella, high stepped it past Frankie Pellegrino (neighborhood kids, you don't know them) and scored a touchdown in a park named after a nut in the shadow of the Sears Tower in Chicago.
8. OK, so what do you blog about?
Local sports. All local, all the time. It's simple really. Three seasons, plenty of teams, countless athletes and great stories. You can't walk out of a Shenandoah District tiddlywinks battle between Riverheads and Buffalo Gap without a blog post, let alone a football game.
9. Do you answer questions?
Of course I do. But that's on you, add to the DPP mail trough and we'll post the answers in our "Say What?" section. Heck, you do it enough and we'll make it Mail Trough Mondays.
10. How do we e-mail you?
Clicking this link, big guy.
11. Man, sarcasm again?
Master Shake helped me meet my wife, thus proving nothing. (Or something like that, I don't know. Let's move on.)
12. What's the best way to get a question posted and answered?
Make the subject creative.
13. Does this jersey make me look fat?
I'm not answering that.
14. Grilled or boiled?
The only way any high school concession stand should sell hot dogs in grilled. Lock. The. Thread.
15. What's the best game you covered?
Handley against Waynesboro in the Region II finals Daniel Freeman's senior year. Freeman and Handley's Lang Campbell had a personal war on that court. Freeman won.
16. That was the best one?
Yep, still sweaty after the loss, Campbell smiled. "That was fun," he said. It was.
It always will be.
About
Toggling between the butt-numbing bleachers and standing against a fence, I watched Justin Verlander give up one hit and lose to Clarke County. I watched Jake Peeling wrap his dad in a hug after pitching a no-hitter.
