A talkative Democratic Veep nominee

The wait was worth it.

After being told that Democratic Vice Presidential nominee Joe Biden would be available for a brief telephone interview on Saturday by Obama campaign officials the day before, there were several delays.

An interview that was supposed to happen about 3:45, took place at 4:30. But after being told that I had 6 minutes with Biden, the effusive candidate talked for nearly 13.

Rather than agreeing to a government bailout now, he wants the experts at the Federal Reserve and Treasury Department to work with Congress on a long-term solution.

An article in Saturday’s New York Times made it look as if he was bashing his Senate colleague and current opponent, Republican nominee John McCain.

Biden said the article was misleading, and said while he and McCain disagree on the issues, they have a friendship that dates back three decades. Their differences are substantive, not personal, he said.

Biden was wrapping up a second straight day of Virginia campaigning. He visited Northern Virginia on Friday, and was in Southwest Virginia Saturday.

I told the Delaware senator I had enjoyed hearing his son Beau speak at Washington & Lee’s mock convention several months ago in Lexington. Beau Biden is Delaware’s attorney general.

Virginia is truly a battleground state in a presidential election that also looks very close. I would expect to see and hear a lot from both campaigns in the waning weeks.
