Getting an education on state budget cuts

We’re starting to get a sense of how Gov. Timothy Kaine’s proposed budget cuts will impact local schools around the state.

Here are some of the potential losses in state revenue. In the Lynchburg area:

Lynchburg: up to $6 million
Bedford County: $4.5 million
Campbell County: $4.6 million
Amherst County: between $2.3 million and $3 million
Appamattox County: at least $1.7 million
Nelson County: about $1 million

Augusta County: $4.7 million
Staunton: $2.5 million
Harrisonburg: $850,000
Martinsville: $1.4 million
Cumberland: $575,000
Shenandoah County: $2.8 million

Hampton Roads
Suffolk: $6 million

Northern Virginia
Alexandria is cutting out $1.8 million from its schools budget, while other areas in Northern Virginia are cutting too: Fairfax - $48 million from state loss; Prince William - $40 million from state loss; Loudoun - $15 million

Different localities will be grappling with it in the coming days, and we expect to have an idea this evening how Waynesboro will be impacted. Mind you, these may not be all their cuts, and some localities may be able to offset some of the cuts through other means. In any case, it’s going to be a difficult budget year for what is typically the largest item in a locality’s budget.

Superintendents from around the state will speak out about the budget cuts on Jan. 22.
