Horse slaughter debated

The New York Times reported Monday that a surge in abandoned horses has renewed the debate over slaughterhouses in the United States.

Waynesboro authorities have charged an Afton man with 36 charges of animal cruelty involving horses and ponies he kept in the city. Two ponies from Tory Allen Garrett’s farm died in March as authorities investigated the condition of others. In that case, most of the horses and ponies are expected to survive under care of the Augusta Regional Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
