Really, Michael “Showbiz” Shabaz had nowhere to go but down. After winning ACC Player of the Week three straight weeks, Virginia’s No. 1 singles player was due for a couple of clunkers.
That was the case this past weekend when Showbiz lost to Duke and UNC.
I think the losses are actually a positive. You want to be playing your best tennis in May, not late March/early April. I think this allows Showbiz to refocus and work on some stuff.
Much better that his clunkers came in April than in May.
Anyway, this is what Virginia coach Brian Boland had to say:
“Michael is mature enough to know that part of competing at this level is that you have your ups and downs. It’s not whether you have them, but it’s how you react to those situations.
“I think you’ll learn more about Shabaz now than when he keeps rolling right through ACC play. Knowing Michael like I do, I’m sure he’ll bounce back.”
Virginia plays at N.C. State and at Wake Forest this weekend.
