TAMPA—My apologies for the couple-day hiatus from here. I’m still trying to recover from Brandon Jennings’ 55-point game the other night.
It was about 6 a.m. when I woke up yesterday, all excited to catch my flight to the Virginia game, when I turned on ESPN and saw the Jennings’ highlights. My Knicks, you see, passed on Jennings in this past year’s NBA draft in favor of Jordan Hill.
The news of Jennings’ double-nickel literally made me want to vomit. I was in the worst mood the rest of the day.
But I digress.
This morning in Tampa nearly made up for Donnie Walsh’s ineptitude. I woke up, got in a swim at the hotel pool and ate a huge lunch.
As I was walking through the hotel lobby, I ran into a number of Virginia people (the team is staying at the same hotel). Coach Tony Bennett seemed in his usual good spirits as he got on the team bus. When he waved to me, I couldn’t help but think of the time in Puerto Rico when Dave Leitao…aw forget it, won’t go there.
A few players told me that it was nice to have gotten a little extra sleep this morning. Apparently, mandatory team breakfasts at the crack of dawn under Leitao weren’t something guys looked forward to.
It was funny listening to Corey Alexander and Mike Curtis converse about Alexander’s desire for a workout plan whereby he could still eat tons of cookies.
The best thing about this hotel is the fact it is in walking distance of the basketball arena. I plan to head over there in a little while. I’ll keep everybody posted. Unfortunately, there is a women’s game being played before the men’s. Hopefully, the men’s game starts on time. It’s scheduled for 7:30.
Oh yeah, it’s 80 degrees and sunny here. Haha.
