It’s a huge weekend for the No. 2 ranked Virginia men’s tennis team. UVa hosts the ITA National Team Indoors out at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
The Wahoos will be looking for their fifth straight—yes, fifth straight!—ITA title.
USC, the reigning NCAA champions, is the No. 1 seed.
Virginia plays Auburn tomorrow night, then takes on the Baylor/Stanford winner on Saturday night. A potential finals matchup between UVa and USC would be Monday afternoon.
I’ll have a full story in tomorrow’s paper, but here are a few snippets from an interview I did with junior co-captain Jarmere Jenkins, Virginia’s No. 1 player.
On playing in front of the home crowd:
“I’m really fired up. We’ve had a really good start to the season with all those [wins over] top-15 teams and I’m really excited.”
On going for an unprecedented fifth straight title:
“It’s obviously a huge accomplishment, but I think for someone who has been on this team for three years, I just look at it as a stepping stone to try and gauge where the season’s going.
“Ultimately, our goal is to win in May. We just need to keep progressing throughout this weekend and we’ll see how it goes from there.”
And here’s an interview I did with sophomore Alex Domijan a few weeks back:
