The Virginia men’s and women’s lacrosse teams both open their seasons tomorrow (Saturday). The men play at Drexel, while the women host Loyola (Md.).
I’ll have a season preview in tomorrow’s paper.
But here are a few thoughts from men’s coach Dom Starsia on facing Drexel:
“They probably don’t get enough attention from the general public,“ Starsia said. “I think for them—this is a big year for them, they have a lot of returning players. The kid in the goal has been a thorn for a couple of years.
“Mark Manos, he’s back. Their defense is back in tact. They have a number of key offensive players back. We’re definitely going to have our hands full going on the road.
“But I can tell you that from the first day that we got together as a group on Jan. 18, we talked about Drexel being the only issue of any concern for us. I’ll be disappointed if we don’t put our best stuff out there. That’s what our expectation is.“
And here’s women’s coach Julie Myers talking about the ACC this season:
“The ACC is going to be as awesome as ever. I think the great part about being in it is it’s the conference everyone talks about. The hard part is we have to beat up on each other. There are great players, awesome coaches and programs with amazing traditions. It’s good to be a part of it, but it’s going to be a dogfight to get through to the end. Hopefully, we’ll end up on top.“
